No Monkey Business: NZ Sauvignon Blanc

The success of Yellow Tail spurred the sudden proliferation of ‘cutesy’ wine labels featuring all sorts of animals, which then served as a sort of warning beacon to wine enthusiasts about what wines to avoid. But New Zealand’s Monkey Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2006 has somehow managed to distinguish itself in a field of insipid wines dressed in cute labels, shining through with its distinct lemony-tart and grassy notes. A bright golden yellow, it was a refreshing drink, and delightful to wash the soupy dumplings Jeff “imported” all the way from New York’s Joe’s Shanghai with. I’d say a great bargain at the $10 price tag too. 😀
